Sepia Tears

Prelude
I didn't know her name. I didn't know where she lived. I didn't know who her parents were, what school she attended, or even her age; but no matter what I did, I couldn't shake the feeling that I was forgetting something. That pitch black night when we first met... that ribbon in her hair, that brought back a pang of remorse each time I saw it...
...and that sepia-stained world where it all began.
Introduction
Snow... it's like a midwinter's reprise
A quiet city bordering the lake, neither too large to be crowded nor too small to go unnoticed; a place where snow often falls more than four months a year, and where the fierce storms of winter have been said to close the roads and cancel public transportation. This place - this dull, seemingly mundane place - is where I grew up.
People say a lot of things about life. Writers, too, and all creators of fiction. Life is one of those things that people can never get sick of talking about, whether it's revealed through the darkest days of war or the brightest days of a teenager's first crush. Life, love, and the most ambiguous and indescribable aspects of our world are always the motifs of the most ambitious works of art.
But when it comes down to it, I don't think any of those things matter. Life is ordinary. We all have our ups and downs, but for the most part, there's no reason to be anything but apathetic. It's the same for love, too. Lots of people go on about their unrealistic fantasies, but we all know that those things can never come true.
...Truth be told, I'd know that better than anyone.
Things couldn't stay like that forever, though. There were things that happened in the past - things that I remembered, things that I forgot - and then there were things that started happening on those cold December weeks of my second year in high school. I had always believed that I would never have to worry about the ubiquitous dilemmas of life and love again, but when the mysterious girl by the name of Myra entered my life, I quickly realized that the past and present couldn't stay separated forever.
Characters
Mark: The reluctant protagonist of the story and the holder of many a forgotten secret. The only way for him to solve the mystery of his lost memories is to overcome his crisis in the present... or is it the opposite?
Rin: Energetic and eccentric, Mark's sister never fails to disappoint when it comes to "things you never thought you'd see". He often describes it as an adventure just waking up in the morning to see what she'll be planning for the upcoming day at school, but he usually winds up being the victim of her antics.
Lillian: Calm, collected, and a little shy, the reclusive model student only reveals her heart to the ones she trusts the most. Unfortunately for her, that very habit might end up leading her into a messy web of feelings with no way out.
Lukas: Strong willed, passionate, and all-around abnormal, this egotistical young man was Mark's first friend in high school. Though he's a decent guy at heart, he never hesitates to inform you that he knows his Zaku from his Gouf.
Myra: Elusive as footprints lost beneath fallen snow, the girl with the smile of an angel and a familiar red ribbon is the person who changed everything. No one knows who she is or where she came from, but when she introduces herself as the key to Mark's past, the gears in his memories begin to turn... and there's no telling what will happen when the answer is found.
